      "But you're creating a bubble". Yes, a pleasant bubble with fewer and fewer jerks in it.

        @mattblaze

        is there any pattern to which servers they're using? maybe we need a class with examples and voting. "this reply comes off poorly but this means basically the same thing but isn't annoying." in the land of geeks, I'd bet more don't realize what they are doing than don't care.

          @mattblaze Yeah, I've never really understood that sentiment either. Like, I don't tend to surround myself with pricks IRL, so why would I allow it online?

                @mattblaze I know people who think they’re avoiding filter bubbles by exposing themselves to right wing discourse as if volume of syntax spares them from having to exert effort on semantics. It’s baffling until you realize they only call themselves moderates because knowing fascism is wrong hasn’t stopped their cravings.

                  One of the things to get over about blocking is the hesitation that you're being "unfair" or "unjust" to someone. No. Your blocking someone only affects what YOU see and how YOUR posts are distributed. It's not a public denunciation. It's personal curation. There's no "justice" involved here.

                    @mattblaze Along these lines, native Portuguese often accuse immigrants of "living in a bubble", to which my response is, "Yeah, Portugal itself is a bubble, but it's what you're used to, so you don't perceive it." We are physically on the edge of Europe but socially also, and they don't want to admit it.

                        @mattblaze if I block someone,I consider it a win for both sides as most of the time, I don't think the other wants to read my answer to their post

                          It's still ok to make a motion as if to swing a scepter and say an offhand phrase about banishing them

                            I never had that problem.

                            Blocked folks on day one, and almost every single time I scroll my timeline.
