Look at the UK. Even once sense is (sort of) restored, the risk that extremists will be voted back in next time round (or the time after that, if you want to be optimistic) will be a constant spectre haunting all attempts to rebuild relationships.
Once trust is gone, it is hard to regain.

And I've been voting against this cancer since I turned 18, and I've even attended some (peaceful) protests near me against this regime.

@thomholwerda the damage is the damage. And no 'ist' or 'ism' will repair it because it demonstrates structural imperfections of load bearing walls.
The system needs to be restructured.
We are as bad a risk as Venezuela until that happens.
However, as someone who defies labels, I must point out that the *first step* is getting sensible people into the right positions so that they can create neutral positions to work from, otherwise the ideological pendulum will just keep swinging.

And while I agree that we have to do a LOT more than rely on this election, and we need to prevent this from happening again, the idea that the damage cant be undone or that fascism is a uniquely American problem is..blatantly incorrect.

@thomholwerda yes we're aware that when the Big Gun waves wildly, instead of focusing on the smaller, 'lesser' countries like expected, thats when europeans draw the line. People on both sides of this in the us can see this.

At the same time, many of the countries in Europe are already controlled by far-right regimes, or are just one election away from a conservative-Nazi alliance that will control them. It can happen here, just as there, and vast amounts of money and influence are being applied to make sure it does. Once 1/3 of your population is lost to continuous lying, it's difficult to see how a democracy survives long-term. Or reconstitutes itself, for the Former US.

Republicans and Democrats are not oppositional forces, so I doubt very much that you voted against the forces that conspired to bring the present moment into focus. 'Now' doesn't happen without Biden giving Palantir and Likud free run of the White House.
Democrats stood down as the Biden Administration laid the fascist architecture that has allowed Trump to do more damage in one year than he ever could have in a consecutive 8. That's no accident.
