    Summer doesn't ask for much.
She is happier and more relaxed on the days that she gets to run for an hour though.
    Yesterday that didn't happen.
So this morning I bundled up to brave the cold and rain. Her comfort is as important as mine I reckon.
Her pal, at the last minute, asked if he could go along. So we make accommodations.
We drove the four wheel drive vehicle to shorten the hike and took the sandy vehicle access to the beach.
We joked about not melting in a little rain no matter how sweet we are.
It worked out we didn't melt.
I am determined to let go of my instinct to decide what is best for my husband. He is the best judge of how to use his energy. I can made it easier though and I do my best.
An epic adventure was had by all.
    Especially Summer and her pal.
Time to dry out and get warm.

I learned that with my dad in home hospice. Their first concern was his "safety", mine came to be supporting his real needs.

Looks like a very good outing for you all! I'm always happy when Summer's pal feels well enough to come along.

That instinct is hard to overcome, and we need to honor that it comes from a place of loving concern, _and_ that it's also not always the best thing for the other person. It's a struggle for me.

Usually it works out. Sometimes it sets us back a step physically. I do believe his mental health would be at risk if he starts to feel hopeless.
The funny thing is that he will have an opinion if he thinks I'm overdoing but would never try to stop me. We work it out. I know it does him a world of good to see Summer having so much fun.
I did say that he shouldn't make me have to pack him back to the truck. I told him to sit down if he feels like he might fall down. We agreed.
Nothing about navigating old age is easy it appears.

As another chronically ill person, I absolutely agree that it's worth the physical cost, to get outside and to do something that makes him feel like himself, when he is well enough to actually enjoy it

And I agree that it's a difficult balance!

@NorcalGma2 I cannot help but wonder where all the driftwood is coming from 😳 It’s not like the Pacific is full of islands with lush forests 🌳

So it is probably wood that is transported downstream by rivers, and then somehow gets thrown back on the beach. I mean, we have a long coastline but hardly any driftwood on beaches. Summer would have a hard time finding a stick on our shores.

These photos are taken on a beach that is about five miles from the mouth of the Eel River. In the old days when there were lots of logging and mills the beach would be loaded with lumber.
Not so much logging now but still lots of wood debris. We saw a spectacular redwood burl today.
Today there were giant logs rolling in the waves.

@NorcalGma2 I'm glad you had a good adventure and didn't melt.

(This brought back memories of my dad telling me when I was just a young girl that I wouldn't melt. I wonder if that's a thing people younger than me and my dad still say to each other.)

@jeridansky @NorcalGma2 I familiar with the, "You're not made of sugar..." phrase. Just yesterday, the Big Guy came out with, "We're not wedding cakes, we're not going to melt." I wondered where he'd been hiding that gem. πŸ˜„
