i need the fediverse explained a bit more to me. is it just an open source social feed or can the login protocols be used on websites like a retail site or blog or any other type of site that typically has users?

@shef the login can be used that way; it's rare that sites implement it. I've only seen a couple blogs do it.

@shef
Compare it to a web browser. Every browser has its advantages, fans, but also idiosyncrasies. Ultimately, however, they all access data using the same protocol (HTML) and display it for you.The Fediverse uses a protocol that allows you to access all the data that your server knows. The client software decides whether it is displayed to you like X, like Facebook, or like Instagram.

Imagine following a Facebook group, from Twitter.
Or someone using Reddit to reply to a Instagram post or Tumblr.
Imagine twitter was not run by a company to make money but by people who just loved it.
Imagine if there wasn't just one twitter like above. but thousands of them. With their own rules, running off donations or generosity of their owners.
Imagine being able to be able to run a twitter on that old computer in your spare room.

Compare it to e-Mail. You have your account at @shef@theforkiverse.com and can communicate with every other account on every other server that supports the AcitivityPub Protocol. Im my case this is my account on my own server.

Imagine the same, but hundreds of youtubes and Instagrams and redditts owned by different people, all seperate , yet all connected together, talking with the same protocol.

Fediverse is actually a kind of nickname that has developed around certain projects. The term Fediverse already existed at a time when ActivityPub did not yet exist. At some point, the term probably expanded to include all servers that are connected to each other via ActivityPub. Some Fediverse projects also connect via other networks, such as ZOT or DFRN. But I think it's fair to say that nowadays ActivityPub is seen as the common denominator that defines the Fediverse. In principle, the term Fediverse is composed of โfederationโ and โuniverse.โ The driving force behind this federated universe are people who use software with the ActivityPub protocol.
