    #AskFedi for those of you who are #blind or #VisuallyImpaired , or regularly use #ScreenReaders but aren't either, is it better for readability if I capitalise words in #hashtags or use underscores? My Mastodon app keeps suggesting no spacing or capitalisation, which I've been told is awful for readability, but it will sometimes suggest words separated by underscores instead.

    Boosts appreciated so I have a more accurate idea of what is more accomodating.

      @disorderlyf Both work; capitalization preferred.

        @webhat I just did another poll, voted with my backup account, and edited the expiration and it kept the results.

            I (a sighted person) voted "4th thing" so I'd get notified of the result.

              Screen readers are able to read #CamelCase hashtags correctly.

                @disorderlyf As a sighted person I usually read that capitalizing each word in the tag is preferred, and I prefer reading such.

                The screen reader Orca seems to pronounce the underscores (as "line"), but otherwise the words are also separated.

                The app suggesting lowercase tags is a known issue, https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/issues/20267, it most likely suggests the first casing it has recorded unless it was later edited by the instance admins.

                    @disorderlyf Capitalizing each word makes them more readable even for sighted people, FWIW.

                      @disorderlyf I don't use screen readers, but people who do have told me that CamelCase (capitalising each word) is best.
                      It may vary depending on the user or the screen reader software, so YMMV.

                        @disorderlyf I think the suggestions are simply what it's seen, so the lack of capitals means few people are aware and putting in the (very minor) effort. I don't use a screen reader, but I've been told by people who do that word initial capitals cause separation of words; all caps causes spelling. So #LOL and #Ice work to have them sound the way I read them.
