    Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is one of the best places to see birds in Southern California and maybe anywhere. The Grear blue herons are one of my favorite things to see. They’re rarely very active most of the year, but when it’s time to nest, it’s not uncommon to see these giants soaring through the air carrying ridiculous sticks and branches.

      Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is one of the best places to see birds in Southern California and maybe anywhere. The Grear blue herons are one of my favorite things to see. They’re rarely very active most of the year, but when it’s time to nest, it’s not uncommon to see these giants soaring through the air carrying ridiculous sticks and branches.

      @Jgbird It's always so strange to see them in trees, instead of wading in water. We have some local rookeries and it's really neat to see them in their nesting phase.

            @eryops @Jgbird So strange! I grew up in that area and saw plenty of Great Blue Herons in marsh settings. Years and years later a GBH exploded from a tree as my friend and I walked under it, damn near gave me a heart attack. I didn't even know they went up into trees. It was an eventful start to that birding hike 😅
