Two things can be true at the same time:
1. copyright is a bit broken and needs reforms
2. the way "AI" can only be trained by complete disregarding copyright is unacceptable"But you used to criticise copyright" is not the gotcha you might think it is.
EDIT: "a bit broken" is tongue in cheek. Of course we massively need to rethink what the purpose of copyright is and how we can ensure that society and the people in it have access to culture to built upon while ensuring people can have good lives while creating and contributing. (The answer is communism of course, but that's a bigger conversation)

@tante 100%. This is one of the few areas I really disagree with Cory Doctorow. I am not remotely convinced his solution of *abolish the whole lot and make it a massive free for all* actually gets us to a better place and not just a different bad one.

@tante quite frankly "a bit broken" is the understatement of the year, but yeah, generally I follow your point

@tante well it might not apply to you, but there were and are radical critics of copyright

@smilingdemon well that is how OpenAI treats shit and we see where that leads. The "tragedy of the commons" is not a law and doesn't always happen but it does happen when to collective good isn't protected against exploitation

@tante exactly

@tante I agree; it needs reform but it shouldn’t be abolished or even substantially weakened. Aversion to copyright is one of the big blind spots of the current left: Eroding it overwhelmingly benefits the right-wing in general and predatory corporations such as Alphabet in particular, by devaluing labor. We can’t “leftistly” stick it to any of these companies by denying people payment for their work. David Golumbia vindicated again. #books
