Incidentally, yesterday's event(s) are why I ALWAYS switch off video autoplay in all browsers and social media apps and refuse to use TikTok or other video media platforms.

@farbel I'm not a fucking American, I don't get a vote in this shit, I DO NOT NEED IT IN MY EYEBALLS. Go away until you've learned to read for context.
It is not okay to share your snuff videos with the whole world without a content warning. You are hurting people. Period.
Exactly
"People need to see this shit"
Okay. I agree. *Someone* needs to see this so things cannot get swept under the carpet."EVERYONE needs to see this shit"
No. People who are easily traumatised by such things do not need to have them forced down their throats."People" v "EVERYONE". A very important distinction.

I do not need to see that kind of shit, and you should think twice before sharing it with strangers without a content warning.
@cstross I have also enabled "Always hide media" and unchecked "Auto-play animated GIFs" for precisely that reason. I don't need to have that stuff shoved in my face - which incidentally are mainly posts that also don't have a CW, nor proper hashtags so I cannot add a filter for it.

Bluesky is no respecter of "no autoplay". I don't even log-in.
(Though, I don't mind when it's Real Amanda Rae. Hubba-Hubba-Hubba. Aawwooo!

@Remittancegirl I think the people who don't realize they're being damaged by this saturation coverage of atrocities are the ones receiving the most long-term harm.
I think the people who are getting murdered in the footage, are receiving significantly more harm.
-
@cstross I seriously wonder when it became “okay” to share snuff.
i don't watch these videos either & i agree that they should have CW... but it becomes OK to share this content when the US media & gov't is telling lies about the victim's actions
for US historical context, (which no one in this thread appears to recall?) Emmett Till's mother would not allow a closed casket because she wanted the world to see the horror so it could not be forgotten-- it was the only way she could get any justice for the crime against her child
-
@cstross I seriously wonder when it became “okay” to share snuff.
It's not.
It's just that some people have become so jaded they feel it's ok to show atrocities to others without warning. It's actually really good here, some other sites I won't bother listing are far worse.
All you can do is block them and hope they are shown as much compassion by others as they are showing.

@houba @Remittancegirl Oh fuck off.

@peachfront @schrotthaufen There is a DIFFERENCE between sharing information that contradicts the government narrative and RAMMING IT INTO EVERYONE'S EYEBALLS WITHOUT WARNING.
If you don't get that, I don't know how to get through to you: your expectations of your media environment are toxic and destructive and you have no problem with inflicting the damage on random strangers.

@cstross
Yes, I have seen plenty in my lifetime but even I get triggered by videos and images (heck I CANNOT listen to the 47th and his cronies without triggering violent rage in my mind
)
It is a very good idea to give a heads up about this sort of thing. I made it a habit to do so after I realized how I reacted to this stuff. We all need to continue recording and sharing so it doesn’t “disappear” but we have to TAKE CARE OF EACH OTHER TOO

no i get it, i absolutely agree... i was responding to the person who appeared to believe the material should not be shared at all (the reference to snuff & legality bothered me)
i have people i trust who are willing to view & describe the material since i am too anxious to view it myself

@cstross I'm angry too.
Hi. Fellow USAican here. Also outraged and horrified. Also agree that these things can't get swept under the rug.
USE FUCKING CONTENT WARNINGS
Respect other people. And understand that the 24-7 outrage you're helping to promote is a tool of the oppressor, designed to wear down resistance and make people hopeless.
You're not helping by forcing this in people's faces. Use content warnings or you'll get blocked, or you'll drive people off the platform. Either way, it's the opposite of helping.

@houba One thing is to spread a word that something terrible happened. Collect the evidence for court. Make sure it doesn't get destroyed.
But the other thing is that the sole purpose why they do it is to spread fear, to make people to think twice before attending such protests. And by making uprepared people to see the video, you may be actually helping to spread subconscious fear, which is exactly why the tyrants hire such thugs...
So really, while spreading the word may be important - and I understand, why normal Americans somehow seek the solidarity of the outside world, now - it is not the same like spreading the videos of someone dying.
It is true, that myself I boosted the situation photo taken just before the murder, but I believe this is different case. I believe it is true and I in that case, it shows man holding cell phone, not gun.
We have one copy of the murder photo just now on our instance and I am going to ask uploader to add CW or sensitive content flag.

Were your sensibilities hurt? Just imagine how it will feel when YOU or a loved one are their target. -

I have no problem with ensuring consent, and broadly agree with you and cs.
My issue here is raising the sensibility of people exposed to the footage to 'the most long-term harm'. This dismisses the violence in the event, I see this as a process of othering, and a pillar of colonialism.
The in-group, not seen as being directly effected by the situation, are given more consideration then the 'other' in an attempt to debase the event in the in-groups collective memory.

Were your sensibilities hurt? Just imagine how it will feel when YOU or a loved one are their target.@donhawkins This is a strange reaction to "I do not want to be shown video of murder without warning or consent". You seem to be assuming they don't care about it, which is not very fair.

@houba really, I am not sure. The rules of my own instance forbid posting gore. We have already one copy of the image here, so I am not sure.
I don't think the effect of writing about the incident and posting related images or videos, but not the killing video itself, is somehow lower. The psychological effect of seeing the actual video may be actually increasing subconscious fear, which may be exactly what was intended by people who gave orders to escalate and kill.
The problem si, that it is somehow making the murderer famous, in a strange way.. there is the other crowd, who would be somehow strangely attracted by this. While yes, it shows, that Trump lies, it is not something we already don't know.
I really can't judge this. It is important, that someone filmed it, because it will be used as evidence for court (at least one day, if not immediately). It will make history. It will be eventually public, but published as historic footage.
I somehow don't believe, that the words are less true if you don't provide video. There are other relevant videos and images. And if it is really necessary, at least, the sensitive content flag is minimum requirement...

Were your sensibilities hurt? Just imagine how it will feel when YOU or a loved one are their target.@donhawkins @cstross those of us not living in America are less likely to be impacted like that. This is the Internet, not the USA. You can put it behind a fucking content warning so that you're not blasting live-action murder into everyone's brains.
We already hate and oppose ICE with our absolutely zero influence over the situation. We don't need convincing it's bad. Stop. -

@cstross I am Israeli. I am traumatised enough from what I experience and from what I know so I don't need to be more traumatised from what I see.

@cstross Why? Sensibilties hurt? What I saw was State's sanctionned execution! And it needs to be shown to wake peoples the FUCK Up to how fucked Up your country is right now!

You are having a slightly different conversation then I am.
What you are saying seems well thought out, there will always be edge cases when deciding these things, and a multitude of opinions and considerations.
The subconscious fear you mention is the fear that you may be subjected to this, this risk is real regardless of you viewing the footage. The consent framing is good, CS right to disable AutoPlay.
There is also the issue of GenAI producing video which can be hard to verify.
