So I have had my first #fediverse controversial debate, and it seems to have faded out.

I am glad it has. It was a tad stressful - I was trying to debate some simple principles but against some very emotive positions. Never easy.

Oddly many posts either deleted or blocked me somehow, not sure which or how I tell. Shame if blocked.

I was understandably seen as devil's advocate in some respects. I tried to stress I was not for this case, but debating for general case.

New experiences for me.

So what I really want to say is this has fizzled out.

This is not how things ever went on book of face or xshitter.

It is probably a good way for it to go - those that really disagree have blocked me. Done.

I stand by my debate, and am ready to be swayed, but some are so strongly against what I say, they just "left".

Old social media would have started to pit me against adversaries constantly. And them against me.

New social media just kills the issue.

@revk People here sometimes do tend to be at the extremes unfortunately.

A couple of times I've had people go as far as pretty much direct harassment here just because I didn't agree with them.

Somehow both were about cars, one person really tried to go on the "you're killing people" route because I don't use public transport.

The other one because I briefly mentioned I considered a Tesla, said I should go die.

Neither were something that I ever had happen in the good days of twitter.

The reality is drama follows wherever people congregate, it's nature, especially much more so online where we can hide behind a screen.
It has always happened, on BBS, on old forums, on "social media" and now on the Fediverse. It is what it is, don't dwell too much on it.

@revk It's always seemed to me how it should work. In real life if you establish someone you know is (in your eyes) a complete dipshit you stop conversing with them and avoid one another.

I'm personally very much of the opinion that much of the problem we have today is that people are required to have opinions on things, whereas historically "I don't give a fuck" and "never heard about it, another pint ?" were sensible answers.

Honestly, just move on. It's obviously a bloody difficult issue, and we all understand the historical balance has been heavily weighted against victims/accusers. But people who cannot see the slightest shade of grey, despite the documented small proportion of proved false allegations, are not worth the time. I'm honestly just glad I'm not in a position where I have to assess such trade offs.
