I am here once again to ask an open source question! Does anyone have experience with security cameras that work with open source software? I’m looking into changing out the Ring cameras for a better solution that I would put me in control of my data and security.
@westhisup Oooh. Paying attention to replies. I’d love to put a camera or two up - but with local storage. And maybe not at the cost of UniFi gear.

@westhisup I actually found this reddit thread yesterday doing similar research and there seems to be a surprising amount of consensus towards Ubiquiti and Reolink. There is also an open source firmware project for Iogenic cameras that sounds interesting. https://thingino.com/

@cpm @westhisup reolink works 100% with homeassistant and you can use their box to store the recordings local

@westhisup I don't have a lot of experience with it due to lack of funds, but I can tell you that all the recommendations I've received essentially say go with Home Assistant for the management software (you can run it on a Raspberry Pi on your LAN) and then use one of the devices they officially support — Reolink has been the most suggested because they support working in 100% offline mode with Home Assistant and no third party API calls online.

@cpm ZoneMinder seems to use AI. Is that AI self hosted or do they get your data to train their AI?

@westhisup @cpm Unless something has drastically changed recently, zoneminder's support for AI only extends to supporting installable third party plugins that run ai.

@westhisup ESPcam is the goto open source firmware for security cameras IMHO. You can roll your own very cheaply. Couple that with zoneminder for the server/storage/motion detection software.

I have a Reolink PoE doorbell camera that I use with frigate and have been very happy with it (installed around a year). I limit its traffic to the local network since it does phone home.
Frigate does local object detection. I use a Coral Tensor m.2 card for it, but there is support for GPU and CPU detectors as well.
Frigate also integrates into home assistant and supports a pretty big variety of cameras. I have a hikvision one in a different area of the house that feeds into frigate as well.

@soleluke @westhisup Same setup, Reolink + Frigate + Home Assistant. Reolink cameras have built-in object detection (person, car, pet) but it's local. They don't require anything involved to enable RTSP or other open streaming protocols.
