    @ambivalena so wild to me. Do you feel any sort of connection to the builders of those buildings? I know you feel an old connection to the land

    @swampgas Well in some way yes, but more to this place that is more close to where I grew up.
    A ruin from an old monastery, about the same age as me 🤣

      @ambivalena that whole system of abbeys and monasteries is really wild to me. I kind of long for something similar except maybe without the desperate poverty and feudalism, lol

        @swampgas Something I've heard said many a time, about the difference between Americans and Brits (probably applies to other countries too): Americans think 100 years is a long time, Brits think 100 miles is a long way.

            @swampgas Well the poverty and the feudalism I would gladly be without. But... I would say we are moving towards a modern kind of the same these days.

              @swampgas 😆 I live in a house from 1847.
              The oldest building here (a cath. church in this really small village) was first mentioned as a donation in 790.

                @swampgas @ambivalena The nearest castle to me was built by the Normans in the 11th century. It’s been around a while. 😉

                        @swampgas The oldest standing building in Phoenix (a city of over 5 million people) was erected in 1870. (Of course Arizona has some very old buildings, but not still in use or in metro areas.)
