I've just Liked Not Boosted seven lovely #SilentSunday images in a row.

@Tattooed_Mummy I flittergibbet my way through different apps, have never found The One. I stopped using two of them because they kept deleting the Alt Text when you hit Send, which was a pain after you'd spent time writing it and then had to start again.
@CiaraNi I use moshidon on android (it's my favourite)
And Toot! And Trunks on my ipad -
@CiaraNi Maybe it's new people? Took me a year or so too to start doing it. No malintentions, just a slow learner.
@SonjaS Of course, it might take someone new time to catch on to using Alt Text if they weren't used to doing it elsewhere. I still won't boost a toot without Alt Text though, as that would be rude to others with sight impairments. In the case today, none of the ones I saw without Alt Text were new users. They were from veteran #SilentSunday posters who've been here for years. They're entitled to not use Alt Text if they don't want to. I was just surprised to see its use falling off.

And Toot! And Trunks on my ipad@Tattooed_Mummy I tried Moshidon recently. I loved the look and feel, but it repeatedly threw away the Alt Text. So often that I gave it up after 2 days. It was frustrating and time-consuming to have to delete a posted toot and redo the whole alt text, with the risk of it being thrown away again.

@CiaraNi I'm seeing fewer without alt text because I've started blocking veteran accounts which never use it.

@CiaraNi @Tattooed_Mummy I just use the official Mastodon app, no alt text problems there. Ever given it a spin?

@CarstenBoll @CiaraNi luckily I've never had an alt text issue here

@CiaraNi Yes, was thinking along the same lines-- they might be new, still that doesn't mean you have to boost them, and yes, if they're not, well. I don't feel like ALT is in decline, though.

@CarstenBoll @CiaraNi @Tattooed_Mummy admittedly, it was very late last night, but the mastodon web app threw away 20 minutes tapping at the moment I posted: I'd copied the body of the post from a txt doc, but not the alt text or tags. May have been memory issues - no, not mine!

@jeridansky I should probably do that. Good strategy. Similar to what I already do with GAI. I unfollow or block accounts that use AI slop.

Tusky? I've never had an alt text issue. And thanks for the tip about settings

@wavesculptor @CarstenBoll @Tattooed_Mummy I still use the Mastodon app, but sparingly because I've had this exact issue with it too. Sometimes it just throws away the toot after I've tippity-tapped the text in and I have to start again. Anecdotally, I think the pattern might be: I've written a toot, but then look at some other window on my phone, then when I go back to Mastodon to press Send, the text is just gone. Not even saved as a draft.

@wavesculptor @CarstenBoll @Tattooed_Mummy I've just realised that the real pattern here may be: every Mastodon app is trying to stop me tooting. I should probably go sit in a corner and think about this.

@CiaraNi Oh yeah, I also block any accounts using AI slop, but I fortunately don't see many of those.

@SonjaS I think you're right. It is not generally in decline, I hope. It was just a coincidence, probably, that I saw so many in a row. And it's especially conspicuous when they are SilentSunday images without Alt Text, because there is other context at all.

@forestfjord @Tattooed_Mummy Tusky was the first app I tried after moving into the Fediverse. I think it kept crashing, so I started looking for alternatives. That was a few years ago now though, so it's worth another look. It may have been some bug that's now fixed. Thanks for mentioning it, I'll check it out again.

@CiaraNi @wavesculptor @Tattooed_Mummy ah, that might be it, I never use it in that manner and never have this issue. I've tried it on other softwares, though, where I often need to cross reference something or look something up and it's infuriating to lose your text to some half-assedly implemented rich text editor...
-

@jeridansky Me neither. The few I did see and ended up unfollowing saddened me. They were otherwise lovely nice mutuals. Then AI Slop came between us.

@CiaraNi @SonjaS
with a positive slant, I'm going to try boosting/quoting/replying to otherwise unnoticed images (and maybe noticed ones too) with this tag #altTextArt or maybe just #altArt or #altGem, where the alt text is as appealing (or more...) than the image itself. Any thoughts on which, or if useful if enough of us do it? -
@Flatus Ah!
