    @kingmoth @Timberwolf @blogdiva Many US states require a voter to register under a party to allow them to participate in that party's primaries so you wind up with a database of individuals associated with their political preferences. And having ID to vote is one thing but it's often the kind of ID that get accepted that can make the difference. Like states that allow a concealed weapons permit as voting ID but not a college ID. Even further, it's pretty common before big elections for Republicans to run a bunch of bills to reduce the number of eligible voters in specific elections, voters that they can pretend to select for arbitrary reasons, but that were actually well calculated from the registration data to have specific and meaningful effects on the election results
