@NigelTufnel Yep, that's the sort of result you should get. I use those same e609/e906s all the time, right on the grille: I usually just drape them over the top of the amp/cab so I won't kick a mic stand. You can get *huge* mileage out of those mics. One thing I've found helpful with those is not just center-vs-edge placement, but how for the amp/cab is from a reflecting wall behind it (particularly with open back setups). Park it against a wall you can get HUGE low end (this is how I record a lot of Bass VI—small open back amp, right up against a wall). Pull it away from the wall you start to focus more on mids and high end. Conversely, you want a round jazz tone? Put a baffle (or pillows, or whatever) between the amp and the wall behind it.The large diaphram mics are great at catching the upper end—a lot of those have a bass rolloff on them and I kind of engage it reflexively.
