@kmherkes Have you read John McWhorter's Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue? He focuses more on grammar than words, and finds that English is a) a creole and b) has a lot more Celtic roots than is generally acknowledged. I found it fascinating. Word whose roots I love - dilapidate, from di/dis + lapid, stone. Literally (approximately), missing stones, or taking stones away.
