I've long refused to subscribe to any newsletter on Substack, and contacted a few folks encouraging them to move — unsuccessfully.

Maybe this reporting from The Guardian will give some publishers the push they need to change platforms. And encourage some readers to drop any Substack subscriptions they have.

@jeridansky So shocking. I had heard the bare outline of what the Guardian reports, but did not realize the extent of it. Must cancel my subscription to Heather Cox Richardson's newsletter. I wonder if there's a way to communicate the reason why to her... (I'll look around, at her podcast page, etc.)

@jeridansky Oh that's great. Thank you! I went to her Substack page and noticed she has over 2 million subscribers. That would be a lot for her to give up, although a fair number would prob follow her wherever she goes. In any case, it can't hurt to let her know one subscriber's viewpoint.

@tc_morekindness And platforms like Ghost have ways to import all those subscribers.

@jeridansky @tc_morekindness Exactly! The whole newsletter boom is about handing control back to authors, so migrating from one host to another is very much built into the model (and/or should be).
