January averages around 12 above-freezing Highs, and 4 of those get to 5°C.
2024 even got to 10°C twice, but those are pretty rare.

I think it comes in part from tv/radio ‘meteorologists’ reporting averages as “normals” … meanwhile in my books, if it happened 5 out of the last 10 years it counts as “normal”

@DavidM_yeg @yegwxnerdery Normal includes all sorts of events, such as thaws. People really don't understand this it all. It's normal to have some unusually warm days and some unusually cold ones. etc etc...

I have always argued that "normal" is a mathnerd word, which has no business in weather discussions.
"Average" can also be misinterpreted, obviously. But at least it's not implying a value judgement the way "normal" does. -
