I stopped running a few years ago after being bitten by a Rottweiler. Local animal control did the bare minimum by contacting the owner, who basically gave an aw-shucks-he’s-such-a-good-boy and got a toothless warning. My warning was not so toothless. I considered carrying a knife on my runs, but decided it wasn’t worth it. And, to be clear, I’m a dog-lover and former dog owner, but I’d have killed that Rottweiler without hesitation if it had attacked me again.

@tantramar Before I read this, I thought the policy was that dogs who bite are euthanized. I love dogs too, but wouldn't hesitate to defend myself in whatever way works. That's an awful experience for you.

@penpencilbrush Well, it could’ve been so much worse. It bit me on the love-handle (
) and, while it broke the skin, it didn’t bleed enough to really call it bleeding. It was clearly meant as a warning. I knew the dog was there (I think it was the first time I’d seen it), and was running on the opposite side of the road, but it came after me after I’d passed its yard. I only saw it behind me at the last minute when I heard its feet on the pavement — there was no warning, no snarling or barking — and it retreated immediately after my warning nip.
