            @cwebber well then i guess they will remain disempowered until they put their collective energies into being something else.

                    well throughout their teenage years and into young adulthood kids certainly manage to learn about things their parents didn't teach them.. the naughtier or more taboo the better, in many cases. Children have brains. They simply refuse to use them. If you doubt that teenagers have active will, try telling one they are wrong about something and see how the teenager responds. Or tell them they can't date or have sex or use drugs or listen to a certain type of music. Then you will see how much agency the young ones truly possess. How capable of rebellion they really are.

                      @cwebber information is widely available in society.. kids simply don't care. they are more interested in Bad Bunny's superbowl performance than they are about higher issues. This is nothing new. Young people's trivial minds. It's a form of self-disempowerment. A phase everyone must pass through on the way to mature adulthood. That having been said, this proposed law is ludicrous.

                          @cwebber @demofox I keep getting this idea that all we need is a UEFI Boolean about whether the device is operated by a minor, and to require ID checks to prevent devices being sold to minors. Then parents can just pw protect the BIOS old school style, and if young Billy builds his own Linux kernel patching the device tree to always show adult the they win the porn prize. I suppose we’d need a solve for defaults reset, too, but doable.

                                      @FelisCatusDomesticus @KarlHeinzHasliP @cwebber I think you are underestimating (drastically) the role of child development psychology and how the brain develops in determining behavior at various ages.

                                      How the hell is a kid supposed to make decisions we expect from adults, when different discrete functional sections of their brains are not finished developing, and developing at different rates?

                                      Children are not "fire and forget". You can't let them loose on the world and then act surprised when they do stupid, potentially permanently damaging things out of both ignorance and irrationality

                                          @neatchee @KarlHeinzHasliP @cwebber

                                          this is where parental responsibility comes into the picture.

                                          except in cases of gross incompetence, parents are still in charge of their kids, at least until age 18.

                                          let's not forget all common sense here.

                                          when the parents are as incompetent with tech as the kids, or even more so, then this is a different discussion.
