with Signal down (seemingly due to AWS issues?), I once again want to remind people that if you selfhost, you are in control of the downtime. And sure that also means being responsible- but honestly it is hardly any work, the hardest part is *not* to touch it once it works.
Decentralised infra > Centralized infra.
It frankly doesn't even matter if you use some friend's server or come together with some people to set this up. Even Deltachat is more decentralized than Signal.

@anthropy Yeah but even when selfhosting, you don"t own the entire internet. There's always gonna be someone running the infra under you and that someone will sometimes be down.

@cst1 surprisingly even my home connection has been down less than AWS lately haha, same for something like Hetzner or whatever, but even if you take away that part and you care enough about it, you can just run your infra in two places and fail over if you want, which is also surprisingly easy these days
