@black_intellect Michael Jackson wrote about #care and loved ones:

"One of the most difficult aspects of caregiving, often made worse by the economic challenges, is its emotional toll. I remember the often paralyzing sense of powerlessness and frustration, and even anger as my mom’s MS and my late wife’s cancer rendered them increasingly dependent on me. Financial pressures exacerbate stress, anxiety, depression, and other mental health effects that are common among family members who care for relatives or friends. Recent estimates are that between 40 to 70% of caregivers have clinically significant symptoms of depression."

On July 14, 1970, a group of activists, many of them in their late teens and early 20s, occupied Lincoln Hospital in the South Bronx. They barricaded themselves inside the facility, demanding safer and more accessible health care for the community.

The dramatic takeover of Lincoln Hospital led to one of the first Patient’s Bill of Rights, changing patients’ relationship with hospitals and doctors nationwide.

"Paternalism occurs when the autonomy of a competent person is overridden on the grounds that an action is intended to improve their well-being. The risk of paternalism in healthcare is significant because of the power dynamic between a person in need of treatment and a person who is able to offer treatment within an establishment that is considered to be authoritative."

"In this paper, I show that the appeal of alternative medicine to women relates to the neglect of women’s health needs within scientific medicine."

Alternative medicine "is valued both for pragmatic medical reasons—because it is believed to be effective, it is assumed to have few or no side effects, it is deemed to be more “natural”—and for ideological reasons—because it is believed to offer control over health, be non-authoritarian, and improve patient autonomy by avoiding paternalism and universalism."
