@cstross I had been living in Scotland for about four hours before my neighbour declared me Scottish. He's born and bred here so I trust his judgement on that.
Also, this place feels like home. -

Man, I ain't qualified to determine that. All my ancestors from that island came out here maybe 150-200 years ago. You do you.

You failed to state whether you are also scot by absorption. -

@cstross If you'd lived in Oz over half your life and drank VB, I'd say you were an Aussie. I'd also wonder why you drank that instead of something better. Anything better.
So yes, you're Scottish.

@graydon "But you see, I *AM* The Great McPagliacci!"

I believe in civic nationalism but not consumer nationalism. I think probably yes, but not because of the facts here listed. @cstross

@cstross but can you trace your ancestry back to the first people who walked into Scotland?
Alternatively: you're not really Scottish unless your whakapapa includes Neanderthals.

@cstross My (English) nan would throw a fit when my aunt (who has lived on Anglesey since the 1960s) called herself Welsh. I can't recall any of her Welsh friends complaining.
-
@cstross It's up to you.
@cstross To clarify: this isn't a case of, "Anyone can be Scottish if they dream in tartan often enough." I believe people who live here and contribute to the common weal, or have been brought up here, are Scottish. But I don't think we'd impose that on someone who didn't want it and felt a stronger sense of belonging to somewhere else. So you get to choose.

@cstross the poll is configured to allow multiple options to be selected, so I guess you exist in a superposition.

Am I Scottish?
@cstross I lived in Scotland for only 9 years, but this included half my Primary and all my Secondary education, and both parents had Scottish ancestors, so I count myself as at least part Scottish.
Also I have a fèileadh-mòr. -
