@sinituulia How lovely. Is it cold enough for the snow to be crunchy?

Extra photo not quite in the same mood:
          Trees, they're really quite good.

Alt text typed up in a poetic haze of being in the middle of my morning coffee, with a cat on my lap and some nice swing jazz playing. What are words?

@weezmgk It wasn't very cold, just -14 Celsius! The snow hasn't had any chance to melt so it doesn't have the sort of frozen rime on it, so it's very very powdery. It's been snowing very gently like sugar poured down from the heavens for weeks, and a sort of humidity from the sea and rivers turning into a snow mist, no wet heavy snowfall at any point!

@weezmgk In a couple of weeks the sunlight is presumably going to be able to melt just the top layer of the snow, making it crunchy. ๐Ÿ˜„

@sinituulia wow, itโ€™s gorgeous. Looks like the upper peninsula of Michigan in the winter. Lots of folks descended from the Finnish diaspora live there too!

@TG_Esq Thank you! I wanted to try out the camera on my new phone, and indeed it is a camera. ๐Ÿ˜„ The weather's been like this for weeks now and it's easy enough to take photos of it!

@lerxst It's been very very pretty! It's not always as cold for as many weeks in a row (probably more like a month or more at this point?) and it's been more like the winters I remember from when I was a kid. ๐Ÿ˜„

A lot of people from here moved there exactly because they were told they'd be familiar with the weather and how it would look!

@sinituulia I just moved back to Michigan last year after not living here for a very long time. I am however a โ€œtrollโ€, or from the lower peninsula (because we live under the bridge!๐Ÿ˜). Thereโ€™s a lot of (mostly) good-natured rivalry between the two peninsulas. I love them both though. I love the beaches here, winter or summer. Itโ€™s kind of wild seeing fresh water as far as the eye can see.

@sinituulia we had a fairly cold January (down to about -20 C, -40 to -50 with wind chill) but itโ€™s been much milder this month. We might even hit 15 C this week though itโ€™s supposed to cool back down next weekend, but only to around -5 to 0. After last month thatโ€™s practically short sleeves weather!

@lerxst Finland is the "land of a thousand lakes" even though there are apparently some 168 000 if you only count the slightly larger ones, so while the lakes are not usually immense, they're absolutely everywhere! I don't think I've ever seen a lake that I couldn't see the other side of if the sprinklings of islands didn't already block the line of sight...

@lerxst There's been some -40C this year, up north, but it's been consistently quite cold (-20C to -30C) for so long that the energy costs have gotten higher than they should be!
I am not looking forward to the snow melt, when all of this is going to turn into miserable brown slush

One marked difference to Finland: There's no mountains anywhere, and even the highest fells are like dinky little baby mountains, after the Ice Ages scraped the mountain ranges into little rock nubbins ๐Ÿ˜น
