The Black Panthers are back on the streets in Philly.
I know I would feel exponentially safer in a neighborhood where they are active.

As Minneapolis shooting stirs fears of state violence, several Black Panther Party members made their presence known in PhillyI am reading "Revolutionary Suicide" by Dr. Huey P. Newton. I am about 2/3 through it, and I think it is a better read than the Autobiography of Malcolm X. Clearly inspired by the latter, it is interesting, accessible, and thought provoking.
I also think the lessons Dr. Newton shared in that book have only become more true today.
In the 21st century, we still need a vision like the Panthers had last century. Very glad to read they are still around!

@cafechatnoir @MisuseCase @kimlockhartga another good book on civil right movement and guns worth shouting out:
@Spirit @cafechatnoir @kimlockhartga That one has been on my “to read” list for a while!

As Minneapolis shooting stirs fears of state violence, several Black Panther Party members made their presence known in Philly@cafechatnoir About now is a good time to read the original demands of the BPP and realize in light of more recent event how so very reasonable and modest they were. Stop killing us. Stop tearing down everything we build. Fight your own wars.

As Minneapolis shooting stirs fears of state violence, several Black Panther Party members made their presence known in Philly@cafechatnoir I might feel marginally safer, but usually, more guns make me feel anything but safer.

As Minneapolis shooting stirs fears of state violence, several Black Panther Party members made their presence known in PhillyIt was inevitable that this would start to happen.
America has the most heavily armed population in the world.
#magats should find a good hiding place soon -

Especially here. I remember the Panthers well, they spent most of their time taking care of people. I'm also firmly convinced that It wasn't MKL that changed minds as much as people think, Malcolm X Was the alternative the Panthers scared folks. You might listen to the speeches Malcolm X made. Since one branch came up I expect them to show up in every city throughout the country.

As someone who isn't particularly keen on guns, I completely get it.
But sometimes resistance needs more than placards.
I have to again recommend The Deacons Of Defense - it's about armed resistance during the Civil Rights era, and a really good read.

And yes, I have plugged this book like 3x already tonight.
But I ask of you - please read The Deacons for Defense. In grad school it opened a whole new aspect of fighting back for me.
It's a book worth your time.
