Voter suppression measures are always about just that: making it harder for people who have the *constitutional right* to vote in elections to vote. The (Republican) Lt. Gov of #Utah (who oversees our elections) did a review of voter rolls and found zero non-citizens who have voted.
Zero.
They did find one non citizen who ended up on voter rolls. That person never voted and was removed.
Also, *she herself* - while serving as Lt. Governor - was removed from voter rolls by a county clerk, because she was born in the Netherlands while her father was serving there in the US Air Force.
If voting is not simple and easy, you are being denied your rights.

Quick correction. The noncitizen who never voted was just removed, not fined. Which makes sense. -

@ricci the fact that Election Day isn't a federal holiday is itself a form of voter suppression.

Though in Utah, we vote almost entirely by mail. You know, the mail-in ballots that supposedly allow non-citizens to vote. Except that they don't.
We do still have polling places open on election day for those who can't or chose not to vote by mail.

@ricci yeah mail-in voting is about the only option for folks who have to work on election day, no wonder it's being demonized

@tobinbaker I also like it because I vote in a far more informed manner. It's just so much nicer to have all the time I want to go through all of the candidates, issues, etc. and take the time to inform myself on any I may not have been following already.

@ricci There's a lot of work that goes into registering voters and also counting and verifying votes. It always gets me that people think it's some half ass thing and that people working in elections dept's are somehow out to prevent folks from voting too.
I worked for our local elections dept. during one major election, one of many agencies i worked for before disability/retirement.
We ALL took our jobs seriously and denying anyone the right to vote, regardless of their views was not a thing.

@ricci It's politicians that are out to make it harder to vote, not those working on the front lines registering or verifying votes and that's imo the big problem with any of it.
Especially politicians trying to overturn mail-in-voting which is very helpful for turnout and can also be done well.
