In a place like Yellowknife, creating digital infrastructure that is locally rooted actually matters. It is easy to use global platforms. It is harder to build something.
Genuinely curious: how can local businesses meaningfully support independent servers and communities like this without turning it into advertising?

@barrengroundcoffee 1/2 ah thanks you guys. It’s great that you’re willing to take a chance on a new platform. Your question is pretty timely. @ZebKing @paulbusch @smattymatty and others have been talking about this recently in developing our fediverse engagement approach. @evan, @votetanille, @avilewis and @tonymcquailgreenprogressive may well have thoughts on this too. Can you guys see the original post?

Put a mastodon link to your presence on other social media platforms or your official website, if you have one.
Or, better yet, print out a QR code to follow you on nwt.social!
If you go to preferences -> invite people -- you can see a 'generate invite link' and check the box that says '
Invite to follow your account' - so this will get people set up on the platform, and follow you at the same time! -

@barrengroundcoffee 2/2 my own two cents is that fediverse communities like ours will do well to tie themselves closely to physical communities as much as possible. In a way, we’re striving to offer a virtual equivalent of what you offer with your cafe. Our authenticity and mutual accountability is our strength and It’s the antithesis of the corporate social media experience. Participation of businesses like yours makes us more relevant and useful to local users. There’s lots to say about this.

@barrengroundcoffee
I immediately want to thank you for your approach to building a relationship on Mastodon. It appears that you get the difference between social media and a community, and your question reflects how much respect you have for the platform. If I wasn't 4,000 kms away, you'd be my local coffee shop.How can you support your local Mastodon community? Promote nwt.social where possible. Encourage customers and other businesses to join Mastodon and focus your attention there instead of those other sites run by tech bros in another country. And don't forget to donate to nwt.social if or when Jeremy tells you he needs to pay a few bills or expand the service. Being a monthy donor to your local server keeps the lights on and the community connected.
