There's a lot of talk in fedi about giving advice when it's not asked for

I think this is a golden rule situation. I think people give what they would like to receive, and don't understand that other people might want to receive something different

People who like receiving unsolicited advice, are generously giving the same thing to others

And people who don't like receiving it, are baffled by why someone would do something so unkind

At least among folks I know, the latter are much more vocal

There doesn't seem to be much recognition that people might differ in this area

I'm wondering what the percentages actually are

    Please boost for reach!

Edit: Oh wow, I am learning so much in the comment thread! About different people's perspectives, and different cultural ways of thinking about the issue. I did not expect this from a little survey 💞

When you post your frustration about a problem you are having, but you don't explicitly ask for suggestions...

@NilaJones When I don't want suggestions, I've taken to saying so.

Usually though, I'm open to things that I haven't thought about.

I'm also an 'advice giver', probably because I was raised to be a problem solver and have spent most of my life solving problems (sometimes for myself, sometimes for others).

I've also learned to mostly couch my suggestions in things like, "If this applies to you" or "if you don't want any suggestions, just ignore the rest of this post"
