"[Today] people across Minnesota will stay home from work, school, and shopping areas in an 'ICE Out Day' to protest the federal agents in the state.

Robert Reich thinks that today's strike in Minnesota "could be a model for what the nation as a whole does in coming months, to repudiate the Trump dictatorship."
He quotes Ana Marie Cox who writes about how Minnesota is a natural leader in modeling solidarity:
“It is impossible to get through a Minnesota winter without help, and only sometimes does that assistance come from your neighbors."

Reich says,
"The decency of Minnesotans is mirrored in a dozen other Minnesota mutual-aid traditions: Lutheran churches seeded what has become the largest refugee population per capita in the United States. Minnesota has had a labor organizing movement since before it became a state. Minnesota created the first high-risk pool in the country to insure 'the uninsurable' in 1976."

"I have been actively involved in protest movements for 24 years. I have never seen anything approaching this scale. Minneapolis is not accepting what's happening here. ICE fucking murdered a woman for participating in this, and all that did is bring out more people, from more walks of life."

I like the idea but. . .if this is happening towards fall, I'm concerned that DJT will say these are "war zones" or whatever term he uses, and he will shut down mid terms. Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

"This is no time for games, for toxic 'both-sides-ism,' for false equivalencies. This is a time to tell the truth. And stop amplifying narratives that perpetuate a dangerous distortion of what’s happening on the ground. Your city and state might be next."

/20@wdlindsy I guess this is the "the Official People wouldn't do this to anyone who didn't deserve it, therefore the people being abused deserve it and also I'm completely safe because I haven't done anything wrong"* phenomenon again.
(*completely shortcircuiting the question of "why do we believe and trust the Official People to do the right thing?" and basically the whole concept of critical thinking.)

"ICE agents threw tear gas at a van carrying six children, and three of them went to the hospital, including an infant who had stopped breathing. ICE agents are pulling over public school transport vehicles full of students. ICE agents are pushing minors and high school students into streets full of incoming traffic; they’re launching tear gas and rubber bullets at senior citizens. They are terrorizing our city."

"A general strike that began in Minnesota is now spreading to other parts of the country, with workers, nurses, and pro-democracy activists coordinating actions that we have not seen at this scale in roughly seventy years. The goal, shared openly by organizers, is to make this the largest general strike in modern U.S. history."

"In Minnesota, the epicenter of the strike, people are taking extraordinary risks. In Minneapolis and Saint Paul, where temperatures have dropped to as low as minus sixteen degrees Fahrenheit, workers are calling in sick, walking off jobs, and gathering in the streets to protest the Trump regime’s ICE and Border Patrol operations."
-
@ferricoxide It would be wonderful if the strike were universal, but people's circumstances and needs can vary, so I don't pass judgment on those who fail to participate. Important to show support for those who do.

@FallsMom I think the important thing is for us to keep trying in every way that opens for us — and trying to make more openings.

I'm not blaming individuals. I'm just mystified by the businesses that are continuing to allow the use of their facilities by #ICE. Not closing is part of that. -

"It’s a good Friday to miss work.
Today, we will see the closest thing to a general strike in the United States since 1946. Much of Minnesota will simply say, 'Hell, no,' to the lawless, vicious, and absurdly unnecessary assault on their neighbors by the Trump regime's Department of Homeland Security."

Happy to say we went nowhere and bought nothing online, and will be happy to do this again as many times as it takes for Wall St to feel some pain.

"We use words like 'police state.' Then we see it happen. To watch is not the same as to experience it, of course. Of being afraid to leave your house. Or having a classmate, co-worker, or family member disappear. But the images make it more real. It removes any illusion that it could not happen here. It is happening here. We see it happening here, if we are willing to look."

/12@wdlindsy right. Even if you do recognize *it could happen here* and you think you're empathizing.... oh, the effect on the body of the real thing....
