@jerry You should. You'll never be happy without cats.

The challenge is that a) my dog has gotten old and needs a lot of my attention, b) I am starting to work again (I don't recommend this, btw), and c) I am still fixing the damage caused by the last cats that lived here

When I was 70 my former CEO offered me a (back from retirement) job as IT guy for a local FM station. Tempting? Yes. Practical? No.

@jerry I've long been a cat dad, though I've had dogs in the past.
I can't recommend them enough. They're just great. They hate you from afar... they judge you... they yell for attention. It's like a teenager who causes allergies.
With an elder-dog, you might want to wait a season. Depending on how comfortable it is around cats, the stress of having a new companion might not be worth it.
Are you "in good" with an adoption agency? I'm not sure how they are in your area but it took a bit when I went to get my cat.

@jackryder Thanks. I think I'm going to hold out and stay focused on my dog. I've had cats for about 35 years, but my last one passed in 2025 and my son moved out with his cats, so I am catless and missing them.

@jerry here is a short video of my cat when she was a little one. No audio, just a little kitten playing with a toy.

@jerry She has a tragic backstory but is an adorable giant floof.
I'll send you random pictures every so often to keep you until you are able to adopt your own.

@jerry @jackryder my first dog passed away in 2024 at the age of 10. She was my bestest little bud. It hit me so hard I developed Broken Heart Syndrome for a few months. Getting a rescue about seven months later has helped me heal.

@jerry when I got a cat, I tried to cat proof my home. They always find a way.
