@xssfox Oh, Medicare. My bad. I was thinking the disability/SSI thing.
Weird that Old People Welfare has expiring cards too.

@xssfox Maybe it's for the same reason they ask every 5-10 years if your as-yet incurable condition is still bothering you enough to deserve the privilege of welfare.
Like, what would anyone think of a family of three physically and/or mentally disabled people, consisting of retirees and a NEET, wanting to move out of the US? Plus their two cats. Would anyone even be willing to host a family unit like this?
Our entire income consists of a US based pension, a US based mutual fund, Social Security for two, and SSI for one. We're currently residing in a nice house, which is probably half or more paid off, with a mortgage payment that's significantly less than any of the average rents in the area.
Can three people and their pets just move to Canada or Europe or somewhere else, and still collect benefits instead of having to find jobs? What about prescriptions for existing diagnosed issues, which have been treated for ages now?
If not, I don't see us ever leaving this housing situation or moving anywhere this lifetime. We've been at this address since 2001, and we'll probably still be here when shit hits the fan, or doesn't.
@lehtimaeki Does it matter as much for someone who is probably going to live out the rest of their days in the US? And how useful will European products be to someone in the US if the US decides to pull its own Great Firewall? And how would someone from the US even fund things if it came to that?
