  • Noam Chomsky is one of those people that some people will defend reflexively without even thinking.

@artemis @shadowfals Yeah, this is right.

I find I'm often needing to point out that, until the early 2000s, popular discourse in the US was severely constricted and dominated by commercial media, which systematically censored any mention of leftist groups or ideas.

Chomsky was about at the limit of what they'd tolerate, in detailing US atrocities and malign foreign policy, based on public records and mainstream journalistic accounts. Significantly, Chomsky would always deflect any questions about what alternatives he'd support, rarely going further than supporting abstract resistance.

  • Be suspicious of anyone who tells you that "Me Too failed."

@artemis This reminds me that in a conflict over a history of sexual abuse in left groups, at one point we were looking at a document in which sexual abusers were denying they had committed sexual abuse, and blamed the accusations on "Me Too".

This backfired on them. It was an ugly conflict, but at least sexual abusers who tried to hide their history and DARVO their way back into political leadership failed.

  • I saw this on a Finnish post, so let me reformulate it a bit and post it in English.

@anttipeltola When I've read histories of computers and programming, I was surprised how often Finnish universities were mentioned.

This also sounds like what's happened with universities in the US. In the 90s, a lot of significant software was developed and supported by universities and government-funded research organizations. But universities ended up outsourcing their IT.

  • Recently, I was thinking about why men¹ talk over women, and I think it's less a gender thing, and more of a...

@alice It's definitely something that men are trained to do. I've had people criticize me for not being "assertive" enough, in just this way. In workplaces, though, I'm usually low enough in status that I'm not expected to say anything in a meeting.

I have also been criticized for talking over people, to be fair. I don't mean to; I just want to complete a thought. In a lot of conversations I feel like I'm waiting for my turn, and I don't recognize when my turn is over.

EDIT: removed a bad figure of speech.
