When I was a kid, Hitler and Tojo were fresh in people’s memory, and so civics, aimed at inculcating the tenets of democracy in kids, was a core part of education. In recent decades, um, not so much. In fact, it’s not prominent or nonexistent in most educational standards. We’re now suffering the consequences. It’s just awful.
