Anyway the reason I roll my eyes at most of the discussion about "AI", "AGI", "the singularity", "intelligence self-improvement feedback loop" is that like, it happened, it's already happened, it's been happening, it's us.@mcc how good is language! how good is written language! the wheel is nothing against the alphabet

I can’t believe we’re doing this again.@malwaretech oh no there is an evil spirit in my room, it communicated via the ouija board!

what's "the old internet" for you?@Lapizistik tbh I'm loving all the replies, people telling me about times I only know from stories (I knew that gopher existed but never used it, I experienced telnet once!) to forums, early social media etc. It's all fascinating

what's "the old internet" for you?@n_dimension wow you have your old bills on microfiche? please tell me more about that! (unironically, I only know microfiche from movies and TV!)

what's "the old internet" for you?@Lapizistik seems like shortly after option 1.
WWW stands for "world wide web" and describes an "information system that enables content sharing over the Internet using a graphical user interface. It facilitates access to documents and other web resources according to specific rules of the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP)."

what's "the old internet" for you?@lethe thanks for your insight! you are right, it's very hard to pick descriptors of an era that are even somewhat universal.
Maybe I should have replaced one option with "local and early social media sites", seems like there was a time with a lot of these (at least I remember them from my time as a teenager)

what's "the old internet" for you?@cubeofcheese universities offered their staff (sometimes students) webspace, and because your home directory is marked with a tilde, it was also in the URL. This text has some interesting reflections on it:

what's "the old internet" for you?@mborus I think it was already a bit cheaper then but one evening I forgot to log out and the next morning the post called my parents

what's "the old internet" for you?@fox_dev_random yes, of course, but you can also still listen to podcasts on your ipod. the idea is that there was a time where you'd find a lot of websites were hosted on some kind of university server and you'd see a lot of tildes
-
what's "the old internet" for you?@joepie91 what would be an example for that?
