  • This is one of the worst takes from LLM enthusiasts.
    Kevin GranadeK Kevin Granade

@arroz I mean... people still audit the machine code sometimes! It's not the first resort but it's on the list, and in any sufficiently complex system you need people that can chase the program logic all the way to the CPU. It stopped being common precisely because the results became supremely consistently good to the point where it became generally recognized as a bad idea to reflexively second guess the compiler.
That process has not happened with LLMs, they constantly spit out broken code.

  • TIL that SSDs can lose data if left unplugged for long periods of time (only required to hold data up to 1 year), unlike HDDs which as long as the material holds it can take years.

@djlink I mean yea, but both are not ok for archiving, you actually want them in a live enclosure, preffereably with redundancy

  • We'll see how I feel in the morning, but for now i seem to have convinced myself to actually read that fuckin anthropic paper
    Kevin GranadeK Kevin Granade

@mikalai @seanwbruno @jenniferplusplus the thing that is a positive signal is that it *survived* peer review, which implies that there are multiple, knowledgeable, independent scientists in the area of study of the paper that read it and came to the conclusion, "the conclusions stated by this paper are supported by the data and arguments presented in the paper".

This paper would not survive peer review.

It is a flawed system but it is not worthless.

  • Are we all millenials here or is that a misperception?
    Kevin GranadeK Kevin Granade

@PermaSolarPotter @david_kehm @thordis there's a pretty big difference between, "people born at about the same time as you" and "people in a similar stage of life to you" vs "uselessly broad and arbitrary range of birth dates".

Like, people in your cohort at school, people in middle school vs highvschool vs at college vs working are all meaningful distinctions, but "was this person born just before or just after 1980" is meaningless.

  • Are we all millenials here or is that a misperception?
    Kevin GranadeK Kevin Granade

@PermaSolarPotter @david_kehm @thordis I and the people I know don't accept gen X as an identity. There was a rationale for commenting on the baby boomer generation as a distinct thing, but gen X and later are arbitrary, and regardless using it as an identity instead of discussion of the environment the group experienced is nonsense.
The manufactured history of labeling generations seems to be taking hold now and people are identifying themselves and others with their generation.
