@anthropy @chirpbirb In the case of the one I saw go kablooey, it was open wide enough that it couldn't self extinguish; The valve didn't close. They had put it out by waving it around and then lit it again about 10 minutes later, by which point I assume air had backflowed into it or somthing? Either way it got incredibly hot in their hand really quick, so they put it down and backed away to watch the like, 2 foot flame, and then it kaboomed.

[casually takes apart and puts together a lighter with their ifixit kit during standup]@chirpbirb Be careful with those, if you adjust it to be wide open enough, the flame can actually propagate back into the lighter; I've seen it happen.

I am "nervous about my laptop sitting at an angle because that can damage the hard drive" years old@gudenau Almost certainly, but I bet the "how" is vendor specific, and largely undocumented lol.

I am "nervous about my laptop sitting at an angle because that can damage the hard drive" years old@gudenau @0xabad1dea IIRC not all of them do? And HP was being proactive, which I do appreciate.
I later ended up figuring out how to read the values from it and made my Screen rotate using the gyro.

I am "nervous about my laptop sitting at an angle because that can damage the hard drive" years old@gudenau @0xabad1dea When I got my first SSD I put it in my Laptop and did that, only to discover that my Laptop has hardware on the motherboard that parks the drive when it detects rapidly changing G-Forces.
Which is great if you have a mechanical hard drive, but this SSD did not gracefully recover from rapidfire park commands.

My server now lives in a Git repo!If you're doing it right, everything is in the configuration file. In fact, the system will take steps to prevent you from making changes to the system yourself - the settings for your services are symlinks to a directory owned by a service that is readonly even to root. It's designed to require you to use Nix, enforcing Code-as-Documentation.
I think it's important to understand as well that there is 3 things you can call Nix.
The Package Manager, The Language, and the OS.
Each one can technically be used on it's own - many people use the language and package manager on Non-Nix OS's, like other Linux Distros and even MacOS, but they work best together.
This bit is very off topic, but the end result of all this is quite neat:
Everything is reproducible. The binaries and configuration files will always have the same hash, and the same files end up in the same places.
This extends far enough out that the laptop I am typing to you on right now has a tmpfs for the root filesystem. The system mounts
/nixto that root filesystem, and in a fraction of a second populates the entire filesystem and proceeds to boot. The only data that survives a reboot is
/homeand/nix.My Laptop's OS is, effectively, ephemeral. There is no sustained system state that survives a reboot that isn't also defined in my configuration.
Also you can totally use Nix to do Infrastructure, it's just a little bit more involved.

Multi-round Desktop Linux distribution showdown.@purrperl @ar @abmurrow @rperezrosario
Good to know!
I've never had an opportunity to use them, and now I kinda want to go read about this. -
Multi-round Desktop Linux distribution showdown.@purrperl @ar @abmurrow @rperezrosario I'm not sure how cleanly you could do it, considering a number of factors like the entirety of nixpkgs also being implemented as nix, and it being a functional language, which I'm relatively sure (I've never used them) Ruby & Pearl are not, which is going to cause a lot of issues on it's own.
That said, don't let me stop you, I do not know a lot about this problem domain.
But bare minimum I think you'd end up having to implement the nix language as well as your own DSL. Or have your code transpile to Nix maybe?

Would that actually be... reasonable? I'm curious about your thoughts on how to implement it. -
Multi-round Desktop Linux distribution showdown.@ar @purrperl @abmurrow @rperezrosario I concur about treating it as silly json - Until you start doing conditionals and such you really can just treat it like that, and it's very effective.
Of course then you end up going down the flake based rabbit hole and end up like me with a configuration around 8000 lines long and covering give or take 5 different machines with varying degrees of difference - Laptop and Desktop are mostly the same, my router on the other hand...
(To be clear it's that complex because I enjoyed digging into it, not because it had to be.)

The best thing I can recommend if you decide to try Nix is find someone (like me as an example) who has been using Nix for a while, long enough to accidentally walk into the bear traps, and let them guide you through the woods.

As a Nix user since 2020ish, package selection is bigger than ever, both literally in terms of having everything I want, and numerically; with more than Arch + AUR.
The language is largely unchanged, and the learning curve is still quite rough.
If you can get used to the language though it's a solid way to manage an OS though.

Yes (I wear socks), (My Gender) as the format.
(NB for Non Binary)If you're comfortable doing so, I'd love to know what region of the world you're from as well. (North/South America, East/Western Europe, etc, along with what option you picked. You can even just tell me the climate (like, is it cold?) if that's all you want to share)
Please Boost!
