Don’t you know that water could be used to cool a data center?!

  • How long are you active on the #Fediverse?
    Max LeibmanM Max Leibman

@stux I said over three because that’s accurate if we’re talking about continuously active. I was active for a few months in 2018 before drifting away for a long while.

So tonight, I brought my wife a Friday the 13th bouquet.

  • Putting out a #Fedihired request to the Fediverse: my wife Kourtney is looking for work.

Putting out a #Fedihired request to the Fediverse: my wife Kourtney is looking for work. Part time (or piecework of some kind), remote, flexible or asynchronous hours are preferred (though she would definitely be available for calls/meetings as needed).

For the past several years, she has juggled our children and a part-time professional photography business. Prior to that, she has worked as a legal assistant to attorneys in a couple of different family law practices (note: as an assistant, not a paralegal), and has done reception and office management work previously as well. She has a BA in English.

If you have a part-time need for any of those skillsets or know someone who does, please get in touch! And even if you don't, as always in these situations, please boost for reach. Thank you!

  • Physicists tell us that the strength of the gravitational force between any two bodies is the product of the gravitational constant and the masses of the two bodies divided by the square of the distance between them.

Physicists tell us that the strength of the gravitational force between any two bodies is the product of the gravitational constant and the masses of the two bodies divided by the square of the distance between them.

This so-called law, however, does nothing to account for what is happening between my back and this heating pad right now.

  • Formatting?
    Max LeibmanM Max Leibman

I'm not actually as mad about this as a lot of people are. At a glance, it seems like all they are doing is allowing Notepad to render Markdown files as styled text. If you apply formatting and try to save it as a .txt, you're prompted to either save it as a .md or lose the formatting.

And formatted text pasted in still shows up un-styled, so one of the most popular uses of Notepad I know of—using it as a formatting sink, dumping the clipboard on it to strip formatting—still works.

  • I have good news on the AI safety front: you don’t have to worry about AI breaking containment and becoming autonomous, because no one has invented an AI that *wants* to break containment.
    Max LeibmanM Max Leibman

Once again: grab a linear algebra textbook, and as you read, ask yourself if a computer that could do matrix multiplication would have a mental experience.

If the answer is "no," consider: what if it did A LOT of matrix multiplication?

    Still no?

That's why I say ChatGPT doesn't have a mind. That it doesn’t have awareness. That it doesn’t want anything.

“But Max, but Max, they did an experiment with an LLM and it refused to shut itself down, even to save the user, and—“

SHUT UP. That’s not what fucking happened.

They took a machine that generates plausible text sequences based on all the other text they could get their hands on, they fed it a bullshit story, and it gave a bullshit story in return. THAT’S ALL.

ChatGPT doesn’t want to hurt you. ChatGPT doesn’t want to help you. ChatGPT ISN’T AWARE THAT YOU EXIST.

Because no one has yet invented an AI that wants anything.
