  • TIL that SSDs can lose data if left unplugged for long periods of time (only required to hold data up to 1 year), unlike HDDs which as long as the material holds it can take years.

@drahardja @djlink I'd imagine you'd need more controlled conditions for tape than the others - they probably don't care so much about temperature, humidity and magnetism. Memory is basically impervious to everything except time and electricity.

@drahardja @djlink tape storage has its own risks due to the fact it's exposed to the elements. I've heard of cases where audio tape gets mouldy, flaky, sticky, magnetised / demagnetised, disintegrates, unrolls, crinkles, etc.

  • When the war in Ukraine broke out, and Europe was hesitant in the first year, I thought alright, this is a surprise to everyone and of course we need time to prepare.

@FrancoisPrague @randahl in the ten years I lived in France, I noticed the colonial mindset is still bubbling under the surface.

@BonehouseWasps @satsuma @fesshole I expect it helps. I know instant coffee powder causes a fine foam to appear when microwaved in water. (We have many ways to make coffee in this house, but when my wife has leftover coffee in the flask from the day before, we will pour it into cups, add a dash of instant coffee powder, microwave then top up with boiling water. We're not coffee snobs, and this is a good way to avoid wasting the leftovers.)

@satsuma @fesshole absolutely won't, I'm afraid. Superheated water will only occur when it's absolutely pure and there's no point of nucleation, such as dust or - I don't know - the tens of thousands of sharp edges of leaves and wood / plastic fibres in the teabag ...

@gsprs @GossiTheDog last time I set up a Win11 machine a year and a half ago, it was obligatory to use an account (they had blocked all the workarounds at the time) - and BitLocker was automatically activated. Not sure it's even easy to deactivate that and use VeraCrypt instead, now.

On my previous Win11 machine, I was able to bypass using an account and BitLocker was not provided. In that case I found I could put a firmware lock on the drive - good enough for my purposes.
