I do have a cat. But the one time he did this was when the toilet roll was out on a table. He hasn’t done that to a roll in the bathroom despite us hanging consistently in the most shenanigans-friendly way.

@futurebird Of course. I wouldn’t ever say that to someone trying to learn. But you could tell them the story about the grumpy professor who was a jerk, and they can laugh while learning what printf() debugging is.

@futurebird I’m pivoting off this just to share a funny story. An old CS prof shared this with me when I was staff in a CS department at a university.

One of his undergrads had come to him with a big printed listing of their code (back when that was how you did that! It was probably FORTRAN printed on fan-fold paper). They obviously wanted him to find the problem in their code. It became clear quickly that they hadn’t done anything to debug it themselves.

He started point at various places in the listing. “Right here, add PRINT ‘I am a dumbass’. And here: PRINT ‘I am a dumbass’” and so on. “Then run it and see how many dumbasses you get.”

Now, did he really do that? Is that just how he tells the story? Who knows. But it’s funny. And anyone who has ever written code will agree that this works sometimes.

@visionaire It’s just new people discovering the fediverse. No more, no less. Like when #fuckaas came online or any other server that has a sudden spike in membership. There’s no fuss. Just the frothy enthusiasm of new people trying something new and hoping it will be good.

I’m trying to be enthusiastic right back at them. I want to make them welcome. Help them stay. I’m following a bunch so they have followers and see interactions. I boost their stuff so they get exposure. I’m trying to make their feeds less empty.

I’m trying, frankly, to give them the opposite of the finger-wagging, grouchy welcome that new users have often gotten. One thing at a time. Get them in and enjoying themselves. Gradually introduce them to the culture without putting them off.

I’m about halfway through the podcast and it’s a bunch of journalists who have never run any kind of web site learning the basics of running something.

The podcasts (Hard Fork and Searxh Engine) have lots of listeners. So it might be another decent sized influx.

If you have seen this strange hashtag #forkiverse it’s a bunch of people joining a server run by some big podcasts. It seems to have gotten a lot of activity because they just featured it in a podcast episode. Here’s the link to the episode.

Welp. @steggy called it. It lasted about 45 minutes. I’m getting ready for bed, I’m taking off my wedding ring, and my finger slips. Somehow (absence of sobriety may be a correlated event) my fingers slipped and the thumbnail of one thumb cut a gash in the other. Ouch!

@cpr320 Exactly. I’m trying to find a charger that will (a) plug into the socket I have, and (b) let me limit its draw. I can find (b) but not (a).

Maybe I just need a regular 14-50 plug and an adapter to the L14-30R.

@chris no no, you misunderstand. My 240V circuits have 30A breakers and a standing load of 1-2A. I need to make sure the charger does NOT try to pull more than 20A, and I need to use the circuits and sockets I have.

@lopta can’t add just a socket that is the right shape. That’s a 50A plug. I’d have to have an electrician add a 50A circuit behind that socket. I don’t have that kind of capacity left in my panel. I have a LOT of electric stuff going on. Electricians told me I’m pretty much full. That’s why I need an adapter for the plugs I have, and some method of making sure it doesn’t draw more than I can handle.
