I'm watching from the far end of the island wondering about the stability of my own hillsides, most of which I know are slip prone, some with that magical combo of slip probe and on a faultline. Not much we can do, and it is horrible to look on. Kia kaha

@GrumpyDragon I don't think I ever appreciated that these beautiful hills could be so deadly. It was just rain. A lot of rain, but just rain.

The tragedies unfolding in my town are so awful. The weather events of the last couple of days caused dozens of landslides - I can see several from my house. One in my neighbourhood claimed two lives, one at the beach is still unfolding: two bodies recovered so far, with six more missing, some of them kids.
I know I can't do anything useful, I need to get on with *things*, but I keep getting mental flashes of how it must be for those families. For those kids. I can't bear it.

@essjax Sometimes I find I just need to be a witness to big things. Not in person, but hanging in there as the news comes through in silent solidarity. It’s a vigil.
