Thanks to @leanderlindahl, I was alerted to a monthly event that MastoCanucks should participate in. The 1st Sunday of every month has been pronounced Digital Independence Day & the #did hashtag is spreading across Europe. It's a day to celebrate when you have stopped using U.S. tech and switched to an in-country or open source solution. Get involved by using the #CDNdid tag and let us know what U.S. tech you recently dumped.
#MastoCanadaGOV #DigitalSovereignty

@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty
I'm transitioning my gmail account to my junk mail account, the one I give out to corporations and only check when I need a confirmation code.... let google incur the cost of the spam (even if it's tiny per person it ads up)

@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty Iβve done that a few years ago. My official email lives in FastMail now (Australian company)

@RantingCanuck I am trying to do this as well. Which email provider are you using as an alternative? @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty

I'll be interested in his reply as I am in research mode. I have a son-in-law with PhD in Computer Science who is also looking into alternatives and I'm afraid of what he'll recommend.

@fabio @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty I'm also on Fastmail, but a bit upset that some of their servers are in the US.

I've gone with Proton for now... It's not Canadian unfortunately but at least it's run by a non-profit in Europe (i.e. not america). I admittedly have my doubts about the CEO but having Tim Berners-Lee on the board was enough to get me to sign up for a free level account.

@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty
I still have one, but only for corporations that insist on an email to send notifications and junk.
I use a different service for humans.

BTW - there is a Quebec based Canadian email provider. This IS NOT an endorsement - just pointing out a relatively new startup in case anyone wants to take a look.

@EricLawton @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty wow. If very many do that, I guess their AI will start sounding like advertisements. Or have we passed that milestone already?

@fabio @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty I've been using Protonmail for years. Our politicians ahve been aligning with the US so much over the years I just feel better about Europe than I do about Canada when it comes to policies and legislation pertaining to food or tech.

@Rick_d_card @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty I used Protonmail for a few years before switching to FastMail. Proton may be the best choice for privacy, but itβs much worse feature-wise. I may change my mind in the future again, but the important thing is both are better than Gmail.
Bear in mind the Proton CEO has aligned himself with right wing politics recently. This was the reason for me to move - if I canβt trust the company, might as well get better features elsewhere.
