Thanks to @leanderlindahl, I was alerted to a monthly event that MastoCanucks should participate in.

@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty @leanderlindahl "candid" is not going to work - that hashtag is full of photography posts.
@johnefrancis @leanderlindahl
I blame it on not enough coffee....Will definitely come up with something different.

Thanks to @leanderlindahl, I was alerted to a monthly event that MastoCanucks should participate in. The 1st Sunday of every month has been pronounced Digital Independence Day & the #did hashtag is spreading across Europe. It's a day to celebrate when you have stopped using U.S. tech and switched to an in-country or open source solution. Get involved by using the #CDNdid tag and let us know what U.S. tech you recently dumped.

People will happily tell me there are plenty of non-US options for maps, and there are, but none I could find also included live public transit itineraries, which is critical for me! This one has been checking all the boxes so far.

#CDNdid@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty@thecanadian.social I should specify, they're based in the Netherlands. -

I've had a GMail account for 15+ years. Is it time?
@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty
I'm transitioning my gmail account to my junk mail account, the one I give out to corporations and only check when I need a confirmation code.... let google incur the cost of the spam (even if it's tiny per person it ads up)

@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty Iโve done that a few years ago. My official email lives in FastMail now (Australian company)

@RantingCanuck I am trying to do this as well. Which email provider are you using as an alternative? @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty

I'll be interested in his reply as I am in research mode. I have a son-in-law with PhD in Computer Science who is also looking into alternatives and I'm afraid of what he'll recommend.

@fabio @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty I'm also on Fastmail, but a bit upset that some of their servers are in the US.

@Lynnd @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty
I've gone with Proton for now... It's not Canadian unfortunately but at least it's run by a non-profit in Europe (i.e. not america). I admittedly have my doubts about the CEO but having Tim Berners-Lee on the board was enough to get me to sign up for a free level account.

@ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty
I still have one, but only for corporations that insist on an email to send notifications and junk.
I use a different service for humans.

BTW - there is a Quebec based Canadian email provider. This IS NOT an endorsement - just pointing out a relatively new startup in case anyone wants to take a look.

@EricLawton @ElbowsUpforDigitalSovereignty wow. If very many do that, I guess their AI will start sounding like advertisements. Or have we passed that milestone already?
