    #Canada - Ottawa says it won’t allow Chinese EVs to be used for spying on Canadians

    > The federal government will take steps to ensure that imported Chinese electrical vehicles cannot be used to spy on Canadians, a parliamentary committee heard Thursday.

    > Testifying before the procedures and House affairs committee, Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said Ottawa will put safeguards in place to make sure that Chinese EVs do not have “the capability to transmit information” back home.

    > He was responding to questions from Bloc Québécois MP Christine Normandin, who raised c> >oncerns that Chinese EVs could become “little spies on the road that could record our calls and take pictures of where we are going.”

    > During last month’s official mission to Beijing, Prime Minister Mark Carney signed an initial trade agreement that slashed tariffs on electric vehicles in exchange for Beijing lowering tariffs on Canadian canola and other products.

      @i47i
      At this point US cars like Tesla should be checked if they are they spying Canadians. US beng a neighbor is a greater danger with that data.

        @i47i
        How will they do that?

        Demand that Chinese EV open source their onboard software?

        Give them exceptions to a number of modern safety features that require cars to be able to go online? (Admittedly these might not be mandatory in Canada)

        How exactly does the Canadian government plan to keep that rather ambitious promise?

          Canada will build a wall.
          A great wall. A great big wall. A big beautiful wall.
          It will be called The Great White North Firewall.
          It will keep both the MAGAt and CCP nasties out. /s

            @i47i Sorry, but there is a conflict here. As I know the EU rules better, I'll use these here, but it's literally so that we require carmakers now to put systems into the cars to be online, e.g. two that come immediately to mind in the EU are:
            - automatic emergency calls upon crash detection
            - showing the correct speed limit
            Now our dear politicians might have not realized it, but calculating the current valid speed limit just from visual clues is in general an impossible problem:
