@catsalad When I was like 12 or 13 I modified one of those locks to be the power button thinking it would be so cool to have a computer that could only be turned on with a lock. The rest of my family unfortunately, didn't think so.

@catsalad There are less lockpickers than scriptkiddies.

@catsalad as the label said all it does (assuming it is actually wired up to the motherboard at all) is stop input from the keyboard. Pointless even in that era.

@Infosecben It gave the "feeling" of security, though?

If someone built a 2FA system into a key and lock that looked like that, it might be a fun retro sort of thing

@catsalad make sure you rev the processor a few times to make sure the the bits are sufficiently warmed up and circulating.
A cold boot especially in the snowy winter months is a lot of strain on the machine

@catsalad Little known fact, the "turbo" button turned on a special fan that injected gasoline directly into your CPU for added speed. -

@FediThing @catsalad 3FA: you need two keys, one from a coworker, inserted and turned simultaneously to launch Outlook.

Tense dramatic scenes when one of them refuses to turn the key

@monsieuricon @catsalad Actushually, it injected nitric oxide (NOX) into the southbridge, which was then shunted to the CPU via specialized PCB channels.
Which anyone who actually built a homebrew computer in the 80s would know.
Sheesh.

@monsieuricon@social.kernel.org @catsalad@infosec.exchange if you put your ear onto the computer whilst pressing "turbo" you can hear Vin Diesel whisper "Family"

@catsalad I especially like how the 3-digit display is labeled "Display".
