Generally, if their car is insured, they are insured for all licensed drivers. It might be best to get an international license, if possible.

Thanks. Plans for next year Spring, but unforeseen circumstances might make us travel earlier.
And stay a bit longer, like 3 or 4 weeks.

Each province and territory in Canada has its own legal structure regarding insurance, and I cannot advise about any region but #britishColumbia.

In #BC most personal auto insurance is through the #ICBC, which is owned by the province. If you borrow a car from a family member, and there is an insurance claim, the claim is covered. There may be a penalty if you are not a 'listed driver'.

There is an optional 'unlisted driver protection' which is free for the owner, and they can call their insurer to get it added. It is free until there is an unlisted driver claim; future insurance **with the unlisted driver protection** will have an increase in cost.

Family medical emergencies can create a lot of expenses and changed plans. Your hosts should check their insurance at their end. My daughter was rear-ended, driving my car, and all of the expenses were covered, including her treatment for whiplash and the bodywork that my vehicle needed. Especially during visits for medical purposes, it's important to take some personal outings for enjoyment.
