        @infobeautiful

        I suppose at this broad and binary scale nuance is lost

        South India grows and drinks both tea and coffee , maybe coffee not at tea scale but still quite a lot even with the generally slightly higher price.

        Coffee shops are every where in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.

              @lhengstmengel @infobeautiful True. But they are called cafes. Something to do with french influence. Surest thing i have found everywhere. Every town has a cafe and a hairdresser. Every few hundred meters it seems. Love to see the hairdressers to population stats 😁

              @Microplastics101 not sure what you're trying to say but chances are high that you get a cup of tea, not coffee, at the local hairdresser too. In small local eateries they will serve tea with your noodle soup, not coffee. Coffee is more of a luxury product. So I'd say the map is accurate, at least for Vietnam.

                            @infobeautiful I'm surprised that Japan is in the coffee camp. Tea is literally _everywhere_ in Japan.

                              @USelaine @infobeautiful When it comes to coffee consumption per person Japan is consistently near the top of the list. It grew more and more popular through the 20th century and they have a huge coffee culture now.
