Maybe you don't care about the EU's digital sovereignty. But let's be serious for a moment - the chance of getting rid of MS Teams does sound exciting, right?

@kwramm There is very little from Silicon Valley that you actually need. In fact, I think we'd be better off avoiding it.

@kwramm yes please, kill that demon. why do we use the worst app of each thing ? the worst chat with teams, the worst email with outlook, the worst git website with GitHub. at least we're not forced to use vscode.

it's not like these are any good either. they're slow and heavy, and break constantly, even on a recent laptop. and they all have AI of course.

all these have alternatives that are more reliable, lighter, and either foss or European

@kwramm I'm incredibly excited. Cooking a combo of workadventu.re for chat and talk, discourse for long term memory and nextcloud for collab on files.

How do you think they came up with Teams in the first place?

For my next trick, I'mma de-Google a phone....

@kwramm Yesterday, that abomination showed me a phantom new message notification. Turns out it claimed there was a new message in... a chat from 2019. No, there wasn't.

@kwramm only until it gets replaced with something even worse.

@kwramm Have you tried https://meet.jit.si/ ? @Tijn mentioned it was great a few weeks ago. The last time I tried it was back in 2013 or so. It is American, unfortunately, but fully open source and libre (apache license).

@rocky1138 @Tijn cool! i just wish I weren't bound to the decisions made by my employer's purchasing dept, which probably got a really good deal from MS for buying their entire range of products

@kwramm True. We have had discussions about Teams replacements in case of leaving MS Office, and there will always be people calling it the perfect time for an exorcism...
I do like screen sharing when I help people sort things out.

@mjj screen sharing is nice, but I miss a whiteboard. Firing up MS Paint for that is such a hack

Not to sound too smug, I wrote about the threat posed by giving too much control to Silicon Valley tech bros, 13 years ago.
