Fine if you're buying a snack for lunch, but if you're there for your twice-monthly bulk shopping with an overloaded shopping trolley you can forget about that, inefficient, error-prone and not enough space.
It still can't handle buying a carton full of anything. Will leave the full shopping cart standing there next time and walk out buying nothing in protest. Customer feedback.
Not to mention a lot of old folk struggling to even do it at all, then the exit gate not letting them leave.
No wonder I see most of them shop at Iki instead where there's a friendly cashier that chats about the weather while scanning your items for you.

@yngmar That's bad news. I hope the experiment is a failure, though when corporates do this type of thing, typically they've already made their decision, it's just communicating it.
As you say, it makes a monthly shop impossible. Very disappointing if they go ahead with this. -

@yngmar also some of lidl self checkouts are just slow. Maybe cheap scales or poor software. Also i use "own bag" even i need to wait cashier. But you know, reduce count of placing every single item really helps.

@yngmar here, they tend to close the staffed checkouts at quieter times, but will open one on request. We always insist on a staffed checkout if we can.
If I have to scan my own goods, I want staff discount!
And there's no way my Mum would cope with using one.

As you say, it makes a monthly shop impossible. Very disappointing if they go ahead with this.@withaveeay It seems to be some kind of A-B testing, as currently it's a lottery. Sometimes the conveyor is open, sometimes not. The first time it was closed but someone sat there telling people to use the terminals. I pointed at my full shopping cart, blew some air through my lips making a motor sound and she grudgingly reopened it, asking me to put the "checkout closed, use self-service terminals" sign after my items.
Today there was not even anyone there to shrug at. I had to loudly ask for the old guy stuck at the exit gate to be let out. You're supposed to scan your receipt there for the gate to open, which didn't work for either of us.
So a few abandoned shopping carts may yet turn this experiment in the right direction

That "scan receipt to get out" also fails if you went in to look for something but they didn't have it so you aren't buying anything.

@mcSlibinas Yeah, we always bring our own bags and I had to get help for that and then for the carton of 8 milks because 8 milks + carton weighs more than 8 milks without carton and then to open the malfunctioning exit gate.
Also the area where your scanned items get weighed is too small for everything so you either have to play fucking towers of Hanoi or get error messages again because you removed some stuff to put it back in the trolley, which then confuses the attendant because they don't know what is scanned and what isn't.
Very efficient!

@suearcher @withaveeay Saw someone just jumpd the gate at the closed trolley conveyor for that today. Which, unlike the gate at the self-service, does not trigger a loud alarm

@yngmar yes, it brings the hate. But i hate maksima more, much more.

@mcSlibinas Ah, we rarely go there, just when something is on sale or for swimming diapers

Yeah, if I tried it, it would trigger a loud scream as I broke my leg falling over the gate.

@yngmar @suearcher @withaveeay I forget exactly which store it was, but they had one of those gates, unattended. And this was when I was 23+ stone, over a decade ago. I simply walked through the gate, which opened, sorta. Some metal wasn’t the same shape as it had been before. A security guy came running after I was outside. “What!? There was nobody to open the gate.” He slunk back to wherever he’d been hiding and the gate wasn’t a problem again.
Fixed it like a vet fixes a dog, as they say.

@yngmar oh, about "set quantity" in norfa that never works with sausages. printed weight - 260 gr, real weight - 265 or 285, if you put 5 them at once overall weight goes over limit.
If you check them one by one - it freezes, you need to check every other other item. Those, who made self checkouts - never use them.

@yngmar, I happened to visit Iki today, and there were no cashiers either, only self-service, although there was a helpful employee available.
As for cartons, I think you have an option of setting a multiplier for the product you're about to scan next. (EDIT: didn't read your other reply before posting where this is addressed).

@rq Our Iki is old and in the old part of town and the old people go there. The kind that gives the cashier their wallet to pick out the right money or brings a plastic bag of 1 and 2 cent coins to pay or wants to buy a lottery ticket but first talk about the lucky numbers as if the cashier knew them.
It's a bit slow sometimes, but they're always friendly and patient. Also sometimes good deals on veggies and varške

@yngmar Nearly every time I use the self-service terminals, something goes wrong and a member of staff has to come and sort it out. Sometimes the sensor gets annoyed because I lifted the bag for a couple of seconds while shifting the contents into a more efficient position, sometimes it seems confused that I have bought more than one of the same item. I'm just rubbish at dealing with the terminals.
