@sunnythesheep direct effect means that people in your countries can apply EU law directly in their courts.
Some types of EU legislation have direct effect while others do not. For instance EU directives don’t have direct effect and have to first be transposed into international law by the member states. I always found it ironic that the type of law called a directive doesn’t have direct effect.@hpod16 thank you, "Some types of EU legislation have direct effect while others do not." summarizes it quite well!

Costa was a lawyer and intended from the beginning for his case to be heard before the @Curia, so it's a very different case from Defrenne for sure! But considering that he lost the case I doubt he could have predicted the outcome or the ramifications thereof.
