This fight does not follow international borders. It's a global fascist network, they are coordinating with each other, and the resistance to it must also be global and coordinated.

I can't tell you enough how the "look at what those dumb Americans did to themselves" blinds you from what is happening to all the established institutions, and sends you down the path to further disintegration.

@alexwild The AfD and TPUSA almost certainly are two sides of the same virtual racist christofascist organization

          Dear Europe,

I know you're having a tremendous time yelling at Americans, and fair enough for that, but get your houses in order because what happened in the United States is being orchestrated in your countries, and it may prevail as long as you let this sort of thing grow.

@alexwild It shouldn't blind, but it does. "It couldn't happen to me" is standard defence reaction. The systems work similarly all over the world. Some countries have built better safeguards, but they might not be enough. All this hate is so sad. And predictable.

@alexwild I mean, we are aware and worried, trust me.

But to be clear, a lot of the rise of the far right in Europe is a US export. The 2008/09 financial crisis was caused there. Even the EU migrant crisis has causal ties to US imperialism in the middle east. Facebook, Twitter and YouTube come from the US. Trumpism is being actively imported here. And now, the US has made it official foreign policy to undermine European democracy.

Divesting from the US is part of getting our house in order.

@alexwild No one is saying that the US has a monopoly on racism, but we strive to have a better society for everyone, as difficult as that might be.

And as a catalan believe me when I say I've seen and gone through some discrimination, but never to those extremes.

@alexwild In Winston Churchill's history of the years prior to WWII, he bemoans over and over again how Europe could have kept Germany free and peaceful, if only they hadn't taken up the policy of repeatedly capitulating to a madman.

Why am I reading this now? No reason...

@Merovius Yes, divesting from the U.S., and sanctioning our officials, are definitely part of getting your house in order.

A lot of the fascism is coming from the United States. But there is huge interchange among the U.S. and the British and Hungarian fascists in particular. It's not entirely one-way, and it isn't clear to me the coup in the U.S. would have worked without the international assist.

@alexwild Correct. The anti-migrant psychosis brewing across much of Europe and the world, which was triggered by neoliberal policies designed to squeeze as much wealth as possible from society, is just one manifestation of the massive problem we are facing. Sweden specifically has a long history of racism, which they are in denial of but any search engine will confirm, Denmark too and the UK. Add into this mix the algos and you get what we are seeing in the US today or Myanmar some years ago.

Carney talks a good game. I even think he meant most of what he said. But at home he gutted the national climate change policy (prompting its architect to resign from Cabinet), is gutting the public service at the worst possible time. He is leaning hard into the Canadian petro-state, which in the end is a cog in the omnicidal machinery we're dealing with. He is putting in mechanisms that will allow the executive to circumvent established laws.

                                        Dear Europe,

I know you're having a tremendous time yelling at Americans, and fair enough for that, but get your houses in order because what happened in the United States is being orchestrated in your countries, and it may prevail as long as you let this sort of thing grow.

@alexwild also, hypothetically, anyone doing anything about it who has a lick of sense isn't talking to journalists or documenting their day on social media.

@alexwild I won’t claim to understand how US politics developed. But my impression is that the current wave of democratic backsliding started around 2010, on the back of the Financial Crisis. And the tea party was then as well - and the US has been on this path before even then.
And my impression has never been, that most USians give much of a shit about EU politics.

Dunno. As I said we are aware and worried. But it sounds like you think US authoritarianism is new? Because I don’t think it is.
