@wsslmn when i switched from cable to 4-5G i had to rearrange my router, so I switched it all off 'for the moment'. (No home assistant here)
Now .... Many years later they are still offline.. ๐Ÿ˜…๐Ÿ˜… and the house is running like clockwork!

@vosje62 it just works. That's why I'm not a fan of elaborate automations involving stuff that could be controlled with a classic light switch. It is fun to do, but that is about it for me.

@wsslmn @vosje62 @BuyFromEU Thatโ€˜s nice, and under better circumstances, it would work also for me. But currently, we donโ€™t know anymore where to stay for our pension age, and we travel between two countries, with an accomodation in each of them, also for family reasons. So we need a certain level of remote control also.

@wsslmn @vosje62 @BuyFromEU My idea would be to develop all necessary apps also for EU-made phones with EU-made OS.

@alloalli @vosje62 @wsslmn @BuyFromEU Thatโ€˜s not correct: also Android Open Source was developed and is thus owned by Google, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_(operating_system)
So, legally, Google could still interfere remotely, I suppose. And Google comes under U.S. law, and you know what that means with the creepy orange in the White House.

@alloalli @vosje62 @wsslmn @BuyFromEU Not exaxtly, because Google could prevent others from using the Open Source code in any way that it considers against its own, or against U.S. interests (under U.S. law). Individuals and companies could potentially face expensive lawsuits under U.S. law, couldnโ€˜t they?

@Fietsbel @alloalli @vosje62 @BuyFromEU this is not what the Open Source license dictates. Yes, android makes it very easy to be activated with a gmail account, but that is not a hard requirement.

The code is maintained by them, not owned under the license, and forks exist and thrive like e/OS.

@wsslmn @alloalli @vosje62 @BuyFromEU The issue is: who maintains and updates the code? On my current iPhone itโ€˜s Apple, with any version of Android, it would be Google, am I right? So there would be a possibility for Google then to intrude into my phone, and the problem would not really be solved, except maybe for experts familiar with the details of the source code. If that level is required: thatโ€™s too much, especially for ordinary people without any affinity with science or technology. 1/

Android(versions) on phones are build to make it almost impossible to load an alternative os.
That is why I started a few years ago with a Fairphone (5).
Later on I will change that to e/os.
(And a later Fairphone will have e/os by default.)

@vosje62 @wsslmn @alloalli @BuyFromEU As I read on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//e/_(operating_system), /e/os challenges the public to find parts of the system [โ€ฆ] that still leak data to Google. Itโ€™s not my idea to migrate for that, as Iโ€™d have to migrate from Apple, this being more difficult anyway (certain data loss almost inevitable)

@wsslmn @alloalli @vosje62 @BuyFromEU First, /e/OS would have to work without leaks to Google. And companies should provide apps for the (working) /e/os , also without leaking data to Google.

@alloalli @Fietsbel @vosje62 @BuyFromEU yup, that ideal situation is already here. But we keep focussing on the stuff that doesn't work yet. Which is not Murena's problem, but lies with all the companies that only build for Google and Apple infrastructure.

Google is definitely not the only org working on Android

@wsslmn @alloalli @vosje62 @BuyFromEU No, but all EU-based OS are still under development, it seems, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki//e/_(operating_system)#Murena

When i looked for it in 2024 all apps I needed worked good on e/os.
And there is good info available on that.

That some apps will never work will be in most cases intentionally. If you want to make money with it by data grabbing, you don't want to work it to work on another os where you can't grab the data.
